Meet others who enjoy reading plays aloud. Amateurs and first-timers are absolutely welcome. We've enjoyed a wide range of plays... from Moliere to Albee, Neil Simon to Shakespeare, Chekhov to "The Laramie Project". Meetups happen once a month on a Monday evening at 7 PM, in a public space, emphasis on the word "pub". We typically end around 9:30 or so.

NOTICE: October 2012: This group has relocated from New York to San Francisco. Prior meetings were held in NY but future meetings are being held now in SF. **** The purpose of this group is to read a philosophical text and then have some great, engaging, thought-provoking discussion about it in an appropriate public or private venue. Please also check out our sister group: SF Film & Philosophy, where we watch and discuss films in light of a text: http://www.meetup.com/cinephile/ **** "To philoso …

Good books and good food go hand in hand, I think! A not-taken-too-seriously sort of women's book group that also shuns your everyday "chicklit" - not because some aren't romping good reads but they don't exactly warrant full discussion. Meetings take place at a restaurant or establishment so we can all try new places. Also, if you don't quite get around to finishing the book (or reading it for that matter...no worries!). Just feel free to come to the meetings and socialize too. Quarterly, we …
A Sunday afternoon, a glass of wine, a few snacks, a fantastic piece of playwriting, and a group of avid play readers who like to have fun! What could be better? East Bay PlayReaders is a group for amateurs who are theater lovers and would like the social experience of group reading. The group is open to anyone, and actors can join, but the purpose is to bring in non-professionals who want to be a part of a playreading, without theater experience. The venue we have chosen is in Alameda, CA. , b …

If the thought of Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior fascinates you and you've been pondering Murasaki Shikibu's The Tale of Genji for some time, then this is the book club for you! Greetings. There is hardly anything I enjoy more than to read a good book and discuss it among thoughtful individuals! How about you? Please join if you are interested in being an active participant in a book club focused **exclusively** on classic literature, shown on the following lists below, that has stood the test of time. If not interested exclusively in classic lit, if not willing to stick to selections from the lists below, there will not be a match with this group. The good news is tha …

Have you ever heard of Naked Girls Reading? It’s a group of ladies who enjoy giving readings of various works to a large audience au naturel. The group originated in Chicago two years ago when the founder’s husband caught his naked wife lying in repose focused intently on her book. At that moment, both agreed that there was something amazingly powerful about reading sans culottes. As a PhD literature grad student and a nudist, I have been doing this for years! And now, I think it’s the perfect t …
We read and discuss books that are rooted in or inspired by history in all its shapes and colors. Fiction and non-fiction, both scholarly and popular. Stories that re-create the past. Journalists who tell us "what happened". Interpreters who openly argue a point of view or seek to illuminate the present through the past. There are also many opportunities to leave our armchairs for fun history-focused field trips to museums, walking tours, films, theater, author lectures, etc. For our book discus …
This group is for people who enjoy reading a book and then engaging in fun discussions about that book. It is also for those who are interested in being introduced to books they may not have read if not for the club. Although there are some great groups already established, after a long day of work I don't feel like driving over the GGB or fighting traffic heading North. Therefore this group will meet in Southern Marin-between Sausalito and Corte Madera. We currently meet in Mill Valley. We now …

So what's the worst part of most book groups? Being forced to read a book you simply don't want to read. And what's the best part: getting all those great book recommendations! In this meet up, we're going to dispense with the book *reading* and go straight to the recommending ... and we'll do it with a game I call the "Book Auction". Each participant brings 2 of their favorite books (1 fiction, 1 non-fiction) -- these can be books off your shelf, or new purchases from a store. At the door, ever …

Hello all, my name if Fan Lin. I am a young professional working in the clean tech industry. An old Chinese saying putsit "You learn the world more by traveling ten thousand miles than by reading ten thousand books. To me, traveling and reading carry the same weight and I wish my life will be a more interesting journey full of reading and thinking on the road. I hope to organize reading and travel activities for people who are seriously interested in reading and in exploring the beautiful landsc …
This group is for people who love to read the New Yorker magazine. I love the New Yorker magazine. I generally love people who love the New Yorker magazine. So, I decided to have a meetup where likeminded people can get together once a month to talk about current events, life, and whatever else comes to mind. Whether you are one issue behind, three issues behind, or three months behind; whether you skip the fiction section or only read the fiction section, this Meetup is for you. By popular dema …
We are late 20's - 30's and love reading new fiction. We are fond of discussing the book over wine and therefore, like to try new wine bars around the city. Meeting time: 1st Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM Here is a sample of some of the books we have read this year: The Unnamed, It Chooses You, Open City, How The Mistakes Were Made, The Madonnas of Echo Park, The Fat Years and The Leftovers. We welcome new members who are social, enjoy reading, and will challenge us with interesting or offb …

Small groups will get together to read aloud to one another and appreciate the written and spoken word (and simply have a good time). Each person brings a short selection (fiction, poetry, nonfiction, whatever). Folks also bring drink and nibbles to share. Fancy or not. Meetings will vary; formats will evolve. My small kitchen will be the setting for some events; perhaps others will volunteer their kitchens as well. We may also decide to have thematic events, such as reading appropriate selectio …

There are several Meetup book clubs in the East Bay, but many of them are specialized (e.g., women-only, we only read such-and-such books, etc.), or their meetings fill to capacity so fast that I never get a chance to rsvp - so I decided to start this one. I previously participated in a fantastic book club in Chicago, which gave me the opportunity to read some great books that I probably wouldn't have found on my own. I hope to continue that trend here! This is a mixed-gender book club for anyon …

I am new to San Francisco from the east coast and looking to meet some new girlfriends. I started and was a member of a book club in New Jersey and loved it. This group is for ladies only (sorry boys) in their 20s/early 30s who are looking to meet some new friends and share their love of reading. After all, there is nothing like a good book to start a conversation! And of course, a few cocktails will be involved. Looking for some fun, chilled out ladies who want to make great friends and have go …
Back by popular demand... First, thanks for taking the first step in joining a special group of ladies who love to read, chat, over enjoy a glass of wine. I initially started this group two years ago because I am a book junkie who was looking to join a book club in the area and found none. After a year on Facebook, I decided it was time to take the group back were it all started. We read mostly contemporary lit, but do mix it up every so often with a classic. This is the book club for anyone who …

I took a wonderful play writing class at The Playwright's Foundation in San Francisco. It gave me an appreciation for the group dynamic that a class offers. Since I am not in the position to take a class at the moment I would love to have a meet up that offers what a class environment does. It is invaluable to the writing process to hear one's words read and being exposed to the ideas others has been a rewarding and enriching experience. I also love the idea of writing in a group setting. This s …
The purpose of this group is to bring together people who are single, over 55, and would love to discuss their favorite, or even someone else's favorite book or movie. On the way to doing this we could discuss the issues raised in the book/movie, become a community of friends and enjoy each other's company. Any single senior interested in meeting new friends and forming a loose knit community with whom to discuss books and movies should consider joining us. When we live alone, we can't turn to …

Our plan is to read Ulysses in its entirety. We'll start on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, and meet every Sunday until Bloomsday (wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloomsday), June 16. The book is a challenge, for sure--virtuous reading, if you will--but together we'll get through it. Bring your bowler and your Guinness and get your Joyce on!
If your growing list of Javascript books, articles, and tutorials to read through is as long as your list of projects to experiment with--and you know you're never going to finish all of them alone--this group is for you. Considering the pace of evolution in the Javascript world, trying to stay on top of all that's happening is at best optimistic, and at worst a fool's game. But don't surrender! Enjoy the support and encouragement of a community of like-minded Javascript coders and enthusiasts. …
This group is for folks in the East Bay/Oakland area who want to read the works of this American novelist, essayist, playwright, poet, and social critic James Baldwin, then gather together and discuss what we read. For such a long time I, Sharon, have had a fascination with the work of this amazing writer, his vision and the clarity of expressing that vision. Join us in a reading/discussion group exploring one of the major American voices of the 20th century. We will work our way through "The Pr …
All are welcome! Join us for stimulating book discussion on the second Thursday of the month. We meet from 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm in the Fireside Room at the Lucie Stern Center. So this year we are celebrating 60 years with 007. Sure, Skyfall is a great movie, but what about the books? We'll be reading Ian Fleming's books starting with Casino Royale. Sure we'll talk about the movies: George Lazenby et al but it'll be fun to actually read the original intents. The locales of these books run the gamut from Las Vegas to London to Istanbul to Jamaica to Mahe Island. Hopefully we can find bars/restaurants that correspond to the locales and rap.

Hi there fellow 40-somethings, I created this group when I first moved to Marin County from Southern California and it was a great way to make friends. Now I'm in Berkeley and wanted to start one here. The name of the group speaks for itself, I don't stick with a theme of books to read; one month we may read a mystery, another month a classic, the next...well, you get the idea! We'll have one scheduled book club meeting each month and I'll also schedule meetups in between to attend a literature …
A group dedicatd to reading James Joyce's Finnegans Wake. Sounds pretty straight forward right..... The plan, to read a few pages alone, come together, read them aloud and decipher together. If it sounds like fun, then join. If it sounds like hard work, but rewarding, then join. If you want to laugh at the rest of us, then join.....

Join us for a fascinating evening with author David R. Gillham, author of City of Women, a multi-layered novel that tackles life in World War II Berlin as Sigrid finds herself caught between what is right and what is wrong. Read more about the novel: Whom do you trust, whom do you love, and who can be saved? It is 1943--the height of the Second World War--and Berlin has essentially become a city of women. Sigrid Schroder is, for all intents and purposes, the model German soldier's wife: She …
Playgrounds are for anyone who want to flex their play muscles and be more creative. The one this month will be an improvised play reading of 'Stealin Home, a fantastical play about Jackie Robinson breaking the color line in baseball. We invite you to break out your performance skills at an improvised and playful group reading. This is for anyone who wants to break out of scripted behavior and try something new.
