Hey there! It's been a few years since undergrad and I'm starting to miss seminars. Reading and discussing difficult books with a small group of equally dedicated individuals is a pretty wonderful experience, and seemingly hard to come by outside of an academic setting. I'm not quite ready to quit my job and head back to school, so I thought I'd try and find other like minded folks--too cheap for grad school, but missing the experience of reading in an academic style. I have a comparative litera …

Good books and good food go hand in hand, I think! A not-taken-too-seriously sort of women's book group that also shuns your everyday "chicklit" - not because some aren't romping good reads but they don't exactly warrant full discussion. Meetings take place at a restaurant or establishment so we can all try new places. Also, if you don't quite get around to finishing the book (or reading it for that matter...no worries!). Just feel free to come to the meetings and socialize too. Quarterly, we …

I'm starting this group to discuss current news. I'm reading challenged to understand news and current affairs. I tried to understand news on TV and cable channels, but most news is presented as views, not as facts. The choices media make, as to what will be in headlines and how they decide to present facts, are interesting. Then came news aggregators like google news. They do a better job of presenting everything that is published, but they are still struggling to get the facts out of new eve …

Whether you're young or old, reading a play aloud together can be lots of fun and a great way to meet new characters. Our goal is to bring people of different backgrounds together to experience the fun, drama and the joy of reading a play. Whether you want to take on a big role or you want to listen along, you're welcome here! As we build we'll select a play and a location and get together once a month to take on the pages.
Read and discuss Thoreau's masterpiece "Walden".

Meet others who enjoy reading plays aloud. Amateurs and first-timers are absolutely welcome. We've enjoyed a wide range of plays... from Moliere to Albee, Neil Simon to Shakespeare, Chekhov to "The Laramie Project". Meetups happen once a month on a Monday evening at 7 PM, in a public space, emphasis on the word "pub". We typically end around 9:30 or so.
… I take his classes over Skype, in the library and in cafes and they're always a good mix of conversation, grammar and reading. I'm learning a lot! Highly recommended.
… So, dear friends in the Meetup world, are there others who have never gotten around to picking up this light reading material because it sounds like anything but fun? Do you want to prove/disprove the claims made by the five people who've finished Proust and said it was the greatest, most beautiful novel THAT THEY'VE EVER READ? Proust may not be everyone's cup of tea, but he may be yours. Some advisories/clarifications about the group: 1. This is a year-long commitment, starting in January 201 …
A Sunday afternoon, a glass of wine, a few snacks, a fantastic piece of playwriting, and a group of avid play readers who like to have fun! What could be better? East Bay PlayReaders is a group for amateurs who are theater lovers and would like the social experience of group reading. The group is open to anyone, and actors can join, but the purpose is to bring in non-professionals who want to be a part of a playreading, without theater experience. The venue we have chosen is in Alameda, CA. , b …
A book club where the reading list isn't created by Oprah. Do you love a good Space Opera or Cyperpunk novel? Do people give you blank stares when you tell them that you're reading *another* Asimov novel? I like to read Science Fiction and talk about it with other interested Sci Fi fans. So lets read one book per month then we can meet up talk Sci Fi and make friends that read the same books as us.

There's always room for one more book enthusiast in the Fremont Ladies' Book Club! We are a group of ladies who love to read and love socializing with others who share our passion for books. If this sounds like you, we'd love to have you join us. Everyone gets to contribute to the book selection process. This allows us to read a wide variety of books that we may not have otherwise picked up in the book store. Most of our books have been fiction, but we've also read non-fiction, a children' …
Thrillers are awesome! Well, some, right? I wanted to get a group of people together to read thrillers and talk about them. What we liked or didn't, how the story developed, why some things worked and not others, or compare them to other things we've read. This is not a brainy book club, it is meant to be fun, open minded and for people who like to express their opinion and don't get angry if others don't share it. I'm from Spain, so I'm super opinionated and differences in opinions will always …
… We discuss the reading and whatever else comes up when history buffs are in the same room. With your input, we explore different themes, countries, eras, and writers. We may leave our armchairs occasionally for history-focused field trips to museums, walking tours, films, theater, author lectures, etc. You can find more information about us by clicking items in the brown bar that goes across our meetup board: Pages (discussion guidelines, late cancellation and no-show policy, and frequently aske …

… This group is for anyone who would like to be seen reading a book other than The Girl who Kicked the Fire-dragon's Hornet Tattoo (not saying the Millennium series isn't great...I just think that book clubs have gone a little overboard with them) Also, anyone who has ever been disappointed with Ms. Winfrey's flavor of the month (damn you, Oprah, and your public-swaying ways!) is encouraged to join.

Ever wished you were a member of one of those "book clubs" you see in the movies where we meetup and talk about books and share experiences and laugh and just have fun while building lasting friendships? Well that's what we want this book club to be! The goal is to build a core group of young women (generally 20-somethings) who are looking to build close friendships, have fun, and of course read books!! (Book genres could include chick-lit, young adult, historical fiction, self-help, bestsellers …
