The Great Books Reading Group is not a literature club. It is a discussion group that uses a multidisciplinary approach to learning and exploring the past and present. We are reading from the St. John's College Reading List. As we read foundational texts in the Western tradition, we examine mysticism, history, theology, the earth and physical sciences, mathematics, philosophy and government, as well as art, literature and music.

This meetup is designed to help non-speakers learn to speak, write and read the Yoruba language in a fun, friendly and casual environment with a yoruba speaker. I'm an African who learned to speak and read the language at the early age of 9. Will love to help others do the same! :) I'm not a teacher or tutor, (not yet) just a lover of the language. Will like to try and help! We can have fun coming up with cool ideas to learn and have fun with it. I may be able to help with Pidgin English too …

Readers should read the book in advance of the meeting so we can have an active and lively discussion! Participants who purchase the book in our store will receive a 20% discount on the …

Each month we will choose a book from a different genre. This is a great way to start reading books you may not normally choose. We read pre-1920 history, a mix of world, economic, colonial period, military, ancient, biography, or member interest. Also non-fiction and business books (Michael Lewis, Malcolm Gladwell, etc). Emphasis on quality over a particular genre. All readers with a passion for the material are welcome, meet every 2 months.
This is a non-denominational book club. Just like any other book club, we are reading down a list of books on the topic of Buddhism and we discuss them at restaurants and cafe's near Takoma Park and Silver Spring. You don't need to be self identifying Buddhist to participate and the organizer will not pressure you to "join the club." We'll be reading books for the popular audience and will rotate through all the major traditions with a mild leaning towards Buddhism as it is developing in the US …
The Graphic Novel Bookgroup reads in as wide a range as there are literary genres. The one commonality is that they all involve stories told with the aid of pictures - sequential storytelling. Obviously, this definition does not limit the content, and, if you were to browse several graphic novels, you’d find striking variety: memoir, journalism, literary fiction, humor, experimental, abstract, underground comix, sketchbook/journaling, superhero, mainstream, manga, manwha, the list goes on. Like …
Love to read? Want to meet other queer women? Then this is the group for you. Each month, we'll meet on a weekend afternoon at a cafe or restaurant in the Maryland suburbs (likely Takoma Park or Silver Spring) to discuss a book we have all read. While we are open to reading books of all kinds, this is a book club for queer-identified (lesbian, bisexual, queer, etc.) women. Please respect this request. Our first meet-up will be posted soon -- save the afternoon of July 27th!
This is a typical book club, discussion will be held at a Takoma Park cafe or restaurant (not at the library). We will discuss about 6 to 12 books a year rotating through a list of topics including Economics and Distribution, Environmental Politics. School Lunch Politics, Vegetarianism, Veganism and Animal Rights (as a political topic), Language Policy, Gun Control and citizen activism (and more). The hope is that we can support progressive authors, and learn what we need to learn to move forwar …

I spent an amazing year in Edinburgh, Scotland. While there, I was a member of a creative writing group where I met some fantastic writers. I want to start a similar group in the DC area because I know we have many great writers in the area as well. So here we are. The group brings together writers of all ages and from all walks of life. Whether you are a new writer or have published, all are welcome. If writing is your life, search for a group no longer. The format is writers will bring no mo …
Like that old, soulful U2 rock anthem, do you sometimes find yourself singing "I still haven't found what I'm looking for," and somehow the song's sentiment connects with your spiritual journey? Perhaps you feel emotionally distant from the Christian spirituality and Sunday worship you grew up with. Curious to find out why you’re having these feelings/thoughts/disconnect? But more importantly, curious if there is a better way to think about, experiment with, and practice faith in the 21st Cen …

This is the Tantra & Tantric Yoga Students Group, formerly T Anonymous group. That group no longer exists. My only reason for taking this on is to promote the growth in knowledge of these ancient Indian practices. I am not looking to sell you anything, make you come to any high priced workshops or browbeat you for NOT attending. I seek multiple sources of information for the betterment of the group. Many books exist for our group edification. We might benefit by reading them, en masse, outside o …

Let's get together over coffee and chat about the novels of Susan Howatch, which have been described as follows: In all of these novels there is a meshing of Christianity and psychology, which Howatch uses as a tool to perhaps reach those “who say and think that religion is outdated rubbish.” If you talk to these people in the language of psychology, she says, “then you can say, this is what Christianity is saying. Learn the language." You don't need to be a Christian to enjoy these novels. Ther …

Relationships are the most exciting, infuriating, wondrous, frustrating, loving, annoying parts of our lives! When we talk about the relationships in our lives, whether they be our marriages, work relationships, relationship to money or success or failure, this is where we paint a picture of wh …

If you are like me then you may have grown up on comics. We have also seen comics expand into movies, games, digital etc. Over the years, I have gone from DC to Marvel, currently a combination of both plus some new comers. DC has quite a few comics’ book stores, but they aren’t the places to sit back and discuss our experience. I suggest getting together at a local restaurant and having an open discussion on classic story lines and new/up to date material. Feel free to contact me if you have oth …
Hi, we play "safer soccer" on the weekends in Silver Spring, Maryland, north of the beltway by 5 minutes. You're welcome to join us. We started using an awesome red foam ball because of several under-appreciated studies that imply a link between heading and tau overgrowth. But most people play because our games are just more fun and invigorating than normal soccer games; people don't get hurt as much, so you don't have to worry about accidentally kicking someone in the face with the ball. For …
