There was one book in college that especially amazed and confounded me: James Joyce’s Ulysses. With a reader’s guide on my lap I eventually did made it to the final glorious yes, but I was fully aware that most of the novel’s depth and richness had washed right over the limited pathways of my mind. It’s been awhile, but I’d like to take another stab at it. This time I’d like to start by properly fortifying myself by doing some necessary supplemental reading. And while I’m at it, why not meet som …

Looking for an eclectic group of Washingtonians interested in visiting (or re-visiting) literature that we should have read in high school or college...as well as classic books that we recognize the name of but, well, erm, we've never actually read. Meet-up in person with wine/beer/tea to discuss our impressions!
The Great Books Reading Group is not a literature club. It is a discussion group that uses a multidisciplinary approach to learning and exploring the past and present. We are reading from the St. John's College Reading List. As we read foundational texts in the Western tradition, we examine mysticism, history, theology, the earth and physical sciences, mathematics, philosophy and government, as well as art, literature and music.

This meetup is designed to help non-speakers learn to speak, write and read the Yoruba language in a fun, friendly and casual environment with a yoruba speaker. I'm an African who learned to speak and read the language at the early age of 9. Will love to help others do the same! :) I'm not a teacher or tutor, (not yet) just a lover of the language. Will like to try and help! We can have fun coming up with cool ideas to learn and have fun with it. I may be able to help with Pidgin English too …
The Dupont Circle Reading Railroad is a literature club centered on discussion, friendship, wine and exploration of various mediums (poetry, graphic novels, stories, film, theater).

Great for people that love to explore new food, new restaurants, new drinks, new books, and new people! b. more read. meets every 4-6 weeks! (Person who selects the book chooses the environment for discussion!)
After reading 'The Shack' by William P. Young, I began this quarterly reading club to challenge myself to read (opposed to pacifying my mind with computers, TV, and movies). I was in the library club in elementary school, and I lost the joy of reading leisurely. 'The Shack' renewed my interest!! Most books I've read can be read within a week for those who make reading a priority. With an abundance of obligations (i.e. church, work, school, [oh yeah... and self]), it takes me a little longer to c …
This is just not another tiresome meetup book club that follows some predictable path well trod by about a million other meetup groups. First, we aim to energize your reading life by presenting a rich menu of unexpected offerings rather than a boring genre-specific diet. We will read delightful fables, profound novels about every aspect of the human condition, comedies, plays, thoughtful (but accessible) works of philosophy, as well as a variety of serious political, social and cultural medita …

looking for other women in my area who like to read good fiction or non-fiction (something more than pop chic-lit), and would like to get together once a month or so. Perhaps you have never been in a book club before like me; have never taken the time... one weeknight a month; get reading again and discuss with other interesting, intelligent women.
This is a popular science book club; we meet monthly (on the last Wednesday of the month) to discuss a non-fiction book. The group is modelled on the Herndon VA Science Book Club, so we'll read books that are interesting, thought-provoking, and educational. The goal is to have some thought-provoking fun. Some books we've read or are going to read include: "Rabid: A Cultural History of the World's Most Diabolical Virus", by Bill Wasik and Monica Murphy. Mary Roach's "Packing For Mars: Packing …
Ever read C. S. Lewis or Tolkien and envied their bond in the Inklings? Wish you could have a beer with N. T. Wright, Brian McLaren, Charles Townes, or Francis Collins? Well...this group can't promise to reach those heights of intellectualism. But we can at least enjoy great conversation, share what we're reading, what we're learning and expand our minds by association, ALL while enjoying a good beer or coffee at one of Baltimore's many great hangouts. I hope we can read each others' work, share …

We welcome members who are interested in reading a variety of books and who want to hear the diverse insights and perspectives of others, as well as share their own. We ask that our members be courteous in that they mainta …

Who loves a good read? This group is dedicated to those who flip right to People magazine's book reviews in the check out aisle at the grocery store. To the ones who give story lines a shot, even if it is labeled young adult fiction. The ones who don't care if the book is the next great American novel, or not. I'm creating this meetup based off of my love of books, plot lines, and social company. I am an equal opportunist when it comes to my books, and I hope that if you join, you will be too. T …

The original name was going to be "The messy writer's group for the functionally nutty," but we don't all have to be messy, or nutty, or functional. We read, write and perform poetry. Sometimes it shoots, sometimes sits like dirt, sometimes resists like phlegm, or oozes, or sometimes it just rests above our heads- no matter. It's a product of "the great yellow rose in your brain" (that's Ginsberg). If you have ever said to yourself, after writing a whole bunch of words on a page, "Man I wish I c …
