Meet other New Yorkers who are interested in hearing our common Bible read out loud as written. Much of the Old and New Testament was scribally penned and edited for those who, not having a personal copy, expected to hear a declamation--formal reading by one familiar with the text and able to read it according to protocol. "Blessed he that reads, and they that hear..." begins the Revelation, no doubt referring to such a 'public' reading. The practice of "following along" in our readily avail …

There are no assigned readings, no assigned themes. Instead, read what you want and be prepared to explain (without spoilers, if it's fiction) what makes it compelling or a door stop. Extra points for dramatic reenactments, diagrams, and remembering what it was you read. If you're planning to attend an upcoming event, please list in the comments what you're reading, so those between books can choose whether or not to join you. The idea is to meet within walking distance of the 1, A/C D/B station …

Inspired by a recent story in the Wall Street Journal, about a long-running reading group in which the members read books aloud -- 35 or so pages a meeting -- they've read Dickens, Milton, Tolstoy, Faulkner, the Brontes, Eliot, Austen. In addition to the book we're reading (our first is The Transit of Venus), we've begun meetings by reading other short pieces or poems.
We are fluent speakers of Italian, wanting to keep up or improve our fluency by meeting together once a mnth to read novels aloud to each other - taking turns, of course! It is through reading wonderful contemporary novels in Italian that we become more proficient in speaking, in vocabulary, in use of idiomatic espressions, in syntax, pronunciation. It is a way to keep your Italian on the tip of your tongue, so to speak...No pun intended. And Through reading aloud to each other, we also have foo …

They call this Democracy? Congress doesn't have the faintest idea what they are voting for! They impose laws on you and me without even reading the bills. They hand out your tax dollars countless special interests. They hand out special privileges to anyone with a good lobbyist or a fat campaign contribution. They make laws against your freedom to pander to fear-mongering demagogues. If you fail to report your income you can't say "oops I didn't know it was in there". If you try to get …

Each meeting starts with a video or PDF presentation of the book's key concepts so you can learn everything you need to know just by attending the meeting. We'll discuss how we've applied the book's concepts to our businesses and then leave with an action plan to apply them starting immediately (if you don't use it, you lose it). Each month, we will read and discuss and/or write about a great classic written by various American or European authors. Some of these books we may have read as children or teens, others may be new to us, but all have had a significant impact on readers around the globe and are worth a read, or even a second read. We will meet at a coffee/tea shop or a wine bar each month to discuss the book of the month and share anything we have written about the book, if designated as an optional assignment.

We have friendly, topical discussions about what we enjoyed, didn't enjoy, and found interesting in our reading while making some literate friends in the process. GROUP …

If you are looking for a serious book club in which they discuss the deep meaning of the books please note this is not the one for you. We are a fun, sometimes serious, most times not so serious book club. We all enjoy reading (well of course we do) and have read some very good books and unfortunately a couple not so good books. Our discussions can last from five minutes to an hour and it really depends upon the book. We read primarily contemporary fiction, but we're open to anything. Some of ou …
