Ulysses is one of those books that, if you didn't read it in college, you're not likely to ever read it in adult life. So many of us who used to love reading books, maybe majored in English in college, now don't have the time to really read anymore. The purpose of this meetup is simple: Let's read Joyce's Ulysses, as a group, this winter/spring. We'll meet regularly, give ourselves motivation to read the book and discuss it, and get to check it off a list. I've read it twice in college so I can …

Meet other New Yorkers who are interested in hearing our common Bible read out loud as written. Much of the Old and New Testament was scribally penned and edited for those who, not having a personal copy, expected to hear a declamation--formal reading by one familiar with the text and able to read it according to protocol. "Blessed he that reads, and they that hear..." begins the Revelation, no doubt referring to such a 'public' reading. The practice of "following along" in our readily avail …

Come check us out! You'll be glad you did. We aim to read different genres: fiction, non-fiction, memoirs, …

Inspired by a recent story in the Wall Street Journal, about a long-running reading group in which the members read books aloud -- 35 or so pages a meeting -- they've read Dickens, Milton, Tolstoy, Faulkner, the Brontes, Eliot, Austen. In addition to the book we're reading (our first is The Transit of Venus), we've begun meetings by reading other short pieces or poems.
This group was started to bring people ages 40+ together who share an interest in reading classic fiction and non-fiction (out loud). The group will meet in Forest Hills in a member's apartment. No purchasing of books is required, nor is reading anything in advance. Rather we will pass the book around as we read. It is not required that everyone read aloud. Reading is done on a voluntary basis. You are welcome to come and just listen! The host will provide cold (non alcoholic) beverages. Gue …

ReLIT NY runs a unique program in NYC that collects used books and brings them directly to the public, (for free) thereby making reading more convenient, easily accessible and most importantly cost-free. At the same time, we give old books, that would have otherwise been thrown out, a second life by passing them onto others. What we do: We collect used books from the public through our drop-boxes- currently located at Whole Foods Union Square and W 97th St- and distribute them outside major subw …

This group, formed to read and discuss the works of Ibn Arabi, formed organically following a guided tour to Andalusia Spain by Stephen Hirtenstein of the Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi Society (http://www.ibnarabisociety.org/). We are primarily reading and discussing the Fusus al Hikam of Ibn Arabi, but add other works from time to time. From the Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi Society website: "Mystic, philosopher, poet, sage, Muhammad Ibn 'Arabi is one of the world's great spiritual teachers. Ibn 'Arabi was born i …
This Meetup is for people who are interested in getting together to read Shakespeare's plays out loud. Each person will take one (or more!) parts and we will act them out. At each meetup, we'll take one of his plays (chosen at the previous meetup and announced on the Meetup's website), assign parts and run with it. Be funny, be dramatic, have fun!

They call this Democracy? Congress doesn't have the faintest idea what they are voting for! They impose laws on you and me without even reading the bills. They hand out your tax dollars countless special interests. They hand out special privileges to anyone with a good lobbyist or a fat campaign contribution. They make laws against your freedom to pander to fear-mongering demagogues. If you fail to report your income you can't say "oops I didn't know it was in there". If you try to …
