We are a group of black women who love to read, want to read more and meet like minded women. We are here to inspire women to read, share literature, fellowship, and encourage others in the joy of reading. We meet once a month on a Saturday. We are an eclectic group of women and so are our reading selections. On our web site www.mochagirlsread.wordpress.com we have a inspirational book of the month posted every first Sunday; a children's book posted every Monday along with our book of the month.

Great Books promotes reading, thinking, and the exchange of ideas through the “shared inquiry” method. SHARED INQUIRY Great Books uses a method called "shared inquiry", which is a discussion process that enables participants who have carefully read the same work to help each other explore and understand the work. A leader provides questions that challenge the participants to think for themselves. The conversation allows participants to share their perspectives and respond to the interpretation …
We brought our group to Meetup.com in April 2010, but we actually began our monthly book discussions in September 2009. We have been having our meetings the first Wednesday evening of every month, 7pm at Red Hook Coffee & Tea (765 S 4th St - between Fitzwater & Catharine in Queen Village). The meetings generally go no later than 9pm. We are casual and enthusiastic; our members enjoy reading and collectively choosing and discussing books on a monthly basis. We take turns selecting the books …

This is a literary collective and a safe space for Black women writers to develop a feminist perspective through our reading and recover from the wounds of racism, sexism, classism, and heterosexism, and other forms of oppression in our society, through our individual and collective stories. This is a place where Black women writers can affirm our own voices and give each other the strength to share our beauty, love, rage, and passion with the world. We're a book club in Philadelphia with a focus on contemporary literature. We have a lot of members, but don't worry - we wind up with a comfortable number of folks at the meetings. We meet at a bar, diner, or a coffeehouse, so no hosting duties, plenty of room, and you almost never have to buy the book.

… You are constitutionally unable to accept anything on faith, and you're always thinking, reading, pondering, and synthesizing. And you're really unapologetic about doing just as much reading and thinking as actual doing (meditating, etc.). I'm imagining sort of a study group: We'll pick a book chapter to read before meeting, and then go off on lively, irreverent tangents in a coffeeshop. (About the organizer: I've put in a decent amount of time and experienced things that certainly other people …
